The Treasure Chest

The pressed down coins from Disneyland,
An old time shell buried in sand.
A pincer a tiny crab had lost,
A butterfly's wing, a fairy's ghost.

This brittle box shows things to me,
It holds the key to my memories.

Fifty cents I had got from the States,
A broken wheel from one of my skates.
A treasured bead from my old pearl chain,
A faded doll from a clockwork train.

This brittle box shows things to me,
It holds the key to my memories.

A porcupine's quill from the woods of the south,
A whistle that used to live in my mouth.
A collar of my puppy dog,
Bits of wood from a redwood log.

This brittle box shows things to me,
It holds the key to my memories.

Rip Van Winkle

At the Catskill Mountain’s feet
there lived a simple feller,
He was good and very sweet,
but his wife?- she was a yeller!

Rip Van Winkle was his name
and the children loved him so
With them he would play some games
like flying kites and more

He would do just ANYTHING
if it was to lend a hand
But when it came to his own things
he was just a lazy man!

One day, when his dame had screamed
he went up the hills
And to him it really seemed
that everything was still

When suddenly he heard a cry
calling out his name
But when he looked out low and high
all was still the same

Then he spotted an old man
carrying some strange drink, Rip eager to lend a hand
Ran up without a think

Together they went higher up
till they reached a clearing
Rip joined in their friendly sup
even though night was nearing

Tempted to try out their draught
he drank as much as he could
He drank and drank without a thought
he drank till he felt good

He yawned and then he fell asleep
feeling very good
He became a curled up heap
snoring as much as he could

When he woke up in the morn
it was very bright
But all his clothes were worn and torn
and he looked quite a sight!

His beard had grown so very long
He felt stiff and old
His dog too, had suddenly gone
With no stick he couldn’t hold

He made his way down to his home
New houses were there
At the gate there was a dome
With a painting of a bear

He called out for his wife and dame
But they never came
He felt his mind was in a swirl
Where was his child and dame?

Then he saw a lady near
A child was in her arms
It’s little eyes were full of tears
She was telling it to keep calm

Rip Van Winkle knew that tone
It was of his daughters
Now she had become quite old
Not quite so full of laughter

‘What’s your name’, he asked the girl
‘Judith’, replied she
His thoughts were once again a whirl
She was the daughter of he!

He told her all about his life
She took him to her place
Of a farmer she was a wife
And no more troubles he had to face

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a festival in which the sisters have to tie a Rakhi or a kind of band on their brother’s hand, and the brothers have to promise them that they would always protect them when they were in danger. Then the brother would also give them some money and a gift.

Anita and Ram were very excited, because it was RAKSHA BANDHAN!!  They were both dressed up in new clothes and were ready for the festival. In the morning itself, Anita tied the Rakhi on Ram’s hand. Then, Ram gave her rupees thousand and a teddy bear and promised that he would always protect her.

                        6 YEARS LATER

Anita and Ram both were in college and they were studying hard for their tests. Every day was very busy for them and they hardly met because it was a hostel. But still every night they managed to call each other and find out how they were doing.

One day, when Ram called Anita, he told her that he and his friends were going for a 5 day outing and would she like to come. “It will be really fun!”  He added.
“Yeah! I would love to come but I have to get permission from my teacher first.” She said.
She got permission and started packing immediately.

On that day, Anita met Ram and his friends at the decided spot. When the taxi reached, they all piled in and went to the resort.
At the resort, Anita went to speak to Ram, but he was too busy with his friends and didn’t speak to her at all. Anita felt sad and later when all the friends had gone to their rooms she went to him. “Why did you ignore me that time?” She asked him.
“I was speaking to my friends. Couldn’t you see?” Asked Ram. “Now go back to your room.”
Anita was hurt and angry with Ram. They didn’t  speak to each other at all for a long time.

                   FEW MONTHS PASSED

One day, Anita was waiting for the bus at a bus stand. Ram was also there. They still were not speaking. Suddenly a few men came and started teasing Anita. Ram went to them and told them to stop.
Anita looked at him in surprise and said- “I thought you were not ever going to speak to me? How come you told those men to go?”
Then Ram said-“Why should I ever do that? It is my duty to protect you and after all I am your brother aren’t I?”

After that Ram and Anita never argued or fought again.

It's a sweet world!

It’s our world, it is so small,
It’s not too huge, it’s like a hall.
It’s very bright, it’s very nice,
And over here we don’t grow rice.
It is a dream, it is so sweet,
It is a wonder for your teeth.
It’s all candy, it’s all chocolate,
It’s so lovely, I can give a bet.
For all of you, who love sweet things,
It’s all candy, even the rings.
And do you know how we make money,
For all sweet things, yes even honey,
Make your teeth all rotten bad,
The pain will make you really sad.
Then where oh where oh do you go,
Yes it is, and don’t say no.
The dentist that’s where you will reach,
And then a lesson we will teach.
We’ll poke your mouth with all the tools,
And then maybe, you’ll follow the rules.
Then you will brush, twice a day,
And oh then later you will say,
‘Oh kids don’t do the things I did,
And to save you, the sweets I’ve hid.
Don’t wail like that, for you will see,
A set of teeth and you will be,
So very pleased that you have not,
Disobeyed the rules that I have taught.’
That’s what you’ll say, oh yes you will,
Think about it as your teeth we fill.
We send you to that lovely place,
And then we’ll tackle a strong case.
To get your teeth all nice and clean,
It’s a harder task than you have seen.
Oh yes, we make money from you,
But you also, have some fun too.
You eat some things, so lovely nice,
But you won’t come back in a trice.
And then we got some new kids,
From whom this secret we would have hid.
By,
Gayatri Allamsetty.
PS: Remember not to eat too many sweets!

The luck of Mistletoe

Once upon a time there lived two children named Janet and John. These children lived on a farm and what a wonderful life they led!

There were many animals on the farm and both children loved them all, but their favourite was a horse which was given to them named Mistletoe. This horse was pure white and had a silvery mane. Every day the children would ride on her and sometimes offer rides to other people as well. Each day the children were given a job to do in the farm, like feeding the hens or milking the cows or something like that.

One night, the children had made a bonfire and it was Bill, the farm hand’s job to put it out.
But unfortunately, he had not put it out properly, so when the children were asleep a few flames licked the shed and it caught fire. Now the horses were kept in the shed and they were very alarmed when they saw the flames near their feet. They snorted and stamped and made a lot of noise.

It woke up Janet and John’s father and he was most startled when he saw the shed on fire. He rushed out and yelled to wake up Bill. Together, the two men put out the fire. Thankfully none of the horses were hurt. But they didn't notice that Mistletoe was gone.

The next morning the two children were most indignant when they found out there was a fire and they weren't woken up.

“Where’s Mistletoe?” demanded John, “Is she out?”
“Where is Mistletoe?” asked their father, “I’ll ask Bill.” He said.
So he questioned Bill, hoping that he knew.
But Bill didn't  Janet was in tears when she found out that Mistletoe was gone.
“Where is she?” she sobbed to her father, “Is she stolen?”
“No I'm sure of that!” he said.
But at noon, John discovered some hoof prints leading out from the gate.

“Janet!” he called excitedly, “Janet! Come and see! I’m sure that these are Mistletoe’s hoof marks.”
Janet ran out of the house looking surprised.
“Yes, they are!” she shrieked, “Let’s follow them now! Without telling mum and dad.”
“Yes, let’s.”,  said John, who also didn't particularly want to tell his father either.

So the two children followed the marks and discovered that they led right over the hill as well.
“I don’t know if we should” began John, but Janet interrupted him.
“I don’t care, John! I’d rather risk my life than leave Mistletoe wherever she is.” She said earnestly.

So John agreed and they set off.
They soon found Mistletoe looking rather lonely.
“MISTLETOE!!!!” shrieked Janet.
Mistletoe was indeed very pleased to see them. But John wasn’t listening.

“What is the matter, John?” said Janet impatiently, “We’ve got Mistletoe, now let’s leave.”
“Wait. Listen” said John.
Janet listened. She had much sharper ears than John.
“I can hear two men saying something… Wait! Yes they’re saying ‘tonight at nine ‘o’ clock at this place. We have to steal that old lady’s candlestick also.’”

Janet and John stared at each other in excitement.
“They’re robbers! Let’s tell the police!” said John excitedly.
Janet agreed.
The two children and the horse rushed down the hill and into the farm. They found their father and launched into the tale.

“Well, well.” He said, “We must tell the police.”
So they told the police and they were very surprised with this unexpected piece of information.
So they hid near that place at half past eight and waited for things to happen.

At exactly nine, two shadows appeared in the area and it was the two men. They immediately started discussing about who to steal from next.
Then the policemen jumped out.
“Hands up! You’re caught.” said one. The other fastened the handcuffs on them.

The two grumbling men were taken away and the two children were left with their father.
“Well done.” He said.

A week after that, the two children were sent medals of bravery. Weren't they happy? Of course they were. And Mistletoe was sent some apples. She was pleased.
But they did deserve it, didn't they?

Candy- Home coming

     On a boring, boring day,
on a boring, boring street
I saw a little dog,
which looked so very sweet!

It brightened up my mind.
and I made it up at once,
that I should take this doggy home,
or else I'd be a dunce!

We named the puppy Candy,
she always loves a game,
and now I think that without her,
life would never be the same.

Fourth & First

When we were in 1st standard, how easy!
Nothing to worry, nothing to care!

Now we're in 4th with a heavy bag,
too heavy to carry, too heavy to bear!

When we were in 1st standard, how easy!
                                        Sums like one plus one!

Now we're in 4th how tough!
Sums like ten lakhs + million and a ton!

                                       1st standard was the easiest,
so much time to play and rest,

but even though 4th is really tough,
I still think its the very best!
